At MTV’s Video Music Awards P!nk accepted the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. And her speech was one of our favorite moments about the 2017 VMAs.
‘I know I don’t have a lot of time,’ she began as the audience continued to roar with applause. ‘But if I may tell you a quick story. Recently I was driving my daughter to school and she said to me, out of the blue, “Momma.” I said, “Yes, baby?” “I’m the ugliest girl I know.”
The singer reveals in the speech her daughter considered herself ugly because she ‘looks like a boy with long hair’.
So what did P!nk do? She went home and made a PowerPoint presentation of androgynous musicians to inspire her daughter.
She included artists that ‘live their truth’ and ‘inspire the rest of us’, including David Bowie, Prince, Annie Lennox, Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, and more.
P!nk then discusses that when she’s mocked or criticized, it’s for looking too masculine, or too strong, or having too many opinions.
‘So, baby girl,’ she finished her speech. ‘We don’t change. We take the gravel in the shell and we make a pearl. And we help other people to change so that they can see more kinds of beauty.’
It was a moving moment and story and proved even more why P!nk is so great.
P!nk’s next album, Beautiful Trauma, will be released on 13 October. You can check out the first video here.
