Former United States President Barack Obama listed his favorite songs and books from 2017 and the list features a popular queer artist.
Obama posted the list of his favorite books and songs from the past 12 months on his official Facebook page continuing an annual tradition he started during his eight year presidency.
‘During my presidency, I started a tradition of sharing my reading lists and playlists. It was a nice way to reflect on the works that resonated with me and lift up authors and artists from around the world,’ he wrote.
‘With some extra time on my hands this year to catch up, I wanted to share the books and music that I enjoyed most. From songs that got me moving to stories that inspired me, here’s my 2017 list — I hope you enjoy it and have a happy and healthy New Year.’
The list featured writers and artists from around the world and included one prominent queer artist.
‘My guy pretty like a girl’
Obama listed Frank Ocean’s song, Chanel, as one of his favorite songs of 2017.
The surprise single from the Grammy award winning artist was his most bold song about his sexuality.
‘My guy pretty like a girl’ is the opening line of Chanel which upon its release was described as ‘the most important song in the world right now’ by The Undefeated.
Frank Ocean came out as bisexual in 2012 in a moving letter he wrote on Tumblr. Since then Ocean has made references to his sexuality through poetry and his music.
Most recently he paid tribute to the father in the highly acclaimed movie Call Me By Your Name. American actor Michael Stuhlbarg plays Mr Perlman in the Golden Globe nominated film. He finishes off the film with a powerful speech telling his son that he accepts his sexuality.
Ocean took to Tumblr to declare, ‘Michael Stuhlbarg is my new dad now and that’s that’.
Lesbian singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile also made Obama’s list with her song The Joke.
Carlile married her wife in Boston, Massachusetts in 2012 and welcomed their first child together in 2014.
The Joke was the first single of her 2017 album, By the Way, I Forgive You.
Carlile is a Grammy and GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) nominated artistwho said her song The Joke was about the compassion she has built in her lifetime as a mother, activist and artist.
‘There are so many people feeling misrepresented [today],’ she told NPR.
‘So many people feeling unloved. Boys feeling marginalized and forced into these kind of awkward shapes of masculinity that they do or don’t belong in… so many men and boys are trans or disabled or shy.
‘Little girls who got so excited for the last election, and are dealing with the fallout. The song is just for people that feel under-represented, unloved or illegal.’
Other LGBTI representation in Obama’s ‘best of 2017’ list came from author Naomi Alderman. Obama listed her 2017 book The Power as one of his favorites.
Alderman’s debut novel Disobedience, is about a New York Jewish lesbian living in the home of an orthodox rabbi.
President Barack Obama was the 44th President of the US. He was succeeded by Donald Trump after serving two terms.
